Rest & Rejuvenation

The New ZonePerfect Balanced Life Philosophy would not be complete without addressing the role that rest and rejuvenation play in supporting health and well-being.

"Sleep is an indicator of health, so sufficient sleep quantity and good quality should be considered as an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, as much as exercise and nutrition."1

A tremendous amount of research is emerging that addresses the role of sleep in general health, and how a lack of sleep can contribute to a person's risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, obesity and infections. Sadly, sleep has become dispensable in our busy lifestyles.

Got a project to finish? A favorite TV program to watch? Surfing the Internet? A load of laundry to fold?

These and many other activities keep us up at night, curtailing the sleep we need to function at our best. We feel slightly more accomplished, but tired. It may temporarily reduce our stress to know that some important tasks have been completed, but the long-term consequences of just an hour or two of sleep deprivation are significant.

Our bodies need sleep to learn new things. Wrestling with a problem at work? Trying to learn a new skill? Reading up on a new theory? During a good night's sleep, the brain creates new memory pathways and comes up with creative ways to solve problems. Lack of sleep also means that we will react more slowly to new ideas the next day, and it will be hard for us to focus and pay attention. As we strive to live healthier lifestyles through balanced nutrition and physical activity, we can't ignore the role that sleep plays in keeping us functioning at our best.

Rejuvenation encompasses more than just the regenerative powers of sleep. Rejuvenation also involves the creative, social and spiritual activities that make us happy and whole. Rejuvenation can also include aspects of physical activity and nutrition. A yoga class or preparing a special family meal can help rejuvenate our spirits and be a welcome respite from other demands on our time. Watch for more information about the importance of sleep and rejuvenation and ways to maximize its benefits for you.
